Fontbonne knocks off Washington University
The Fontbonne University men's soccer team remained unbeaten at home defeating Washington University last night 1-0. The Griffins improved to 6-2-2 on the season and 4-0 at Centene Stadium.
The victory marked Fontbonne's first win over Washington University in the program's history. The Bears lead the all-time series 13-1-2. Washington University came into the game ranked #5 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Central Region.
After a scoreless first half, Fontbonne had two great chances to grab the lead in the second half but were unable to find the back of the net. Junior Josh Schulz and junior Wesley Laney both had chances turned away by Washington University goalkeeper Jonathan Jebson.
The Griffins finally got on the scoreboard in the 87th minute when senior Charlie Chafin feathered a pass through the Bears backline that junior Justin Williams got on the end of. Williams hammered the ball to the far post for his fourth goal of the season. Junior goalkeeper Ryan Essenpreiss recored one save in picking up the shutout and the victory for the Griffins.
Fontbonne returns to action Saturday when they open St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) play in Carlinville, Illinois against Blackburn College at 3 pm.
