The Fontbonne University men's soccer team used a dominating first half to ease past Blackburn College yesterday in both team St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) opener. The Griffins scored four first half goals to cruise to a 5-1 victory to improve to 7-2-2 overall and 1-0 in the SLIAC.
Fontbonne senior Charlie Chafin got the Griffins on the scoreboard in the 9th minute with his third goal of the season. Griffin junior Kyle Lewandoski scored his first goal of the season to double the Griffins in 19th minute. Chafin scored his second goal of the game in the 38th minute off of assists by juniors Carl Alsbach and Joe Tibbles.
Alsbach was on the scoring end of a play in the 43rd minute as he scored his second goal of the season on an assist by sophomore Blake Rosner. Fontbonne took that 4-0 lead into halftime outshooting Blackburn 22-2 in the opening 45 minutes.
After Blackburn scored its lone goal in the 48th minute, Fontbonne responded minutes later as sophomore Tim Menzel scored his second goal of the season. For the game, Fontbonne outshot Blackburn 37-7 and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Fontbonne will return to the pitch Tuesday night as they host Principia College at 8:15 pm.
