The Fontbonne University men's soccer team suffered their first conference loss on Tuesday night falling to Greenville College 3-2 in heartbreaking fashion. The loss dropped Fontbonne to 9-3-2 overall and 3-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
Fontbonne controlled play throughtout much of the first half and were rewarded with a goal in the 11th minute. Fontbonne senior Charlie Chafin played a brillant ball into space for a running Joe Tibbles who then served the ball into the box where junior Justin Williams converted on his 000 goal of the season. Despite a couple other solid opportunities to increase their lead, Fontbonne took a 1-0 lead into halftime despite outshooting Greenville 8-3 in the opening 45 minutes.
In the second half, Greenville tied the game in the 51st minute on a wide open header by Nathan Mayberry. Greenville took the lead in the 77th minute on a defensive blunder by the Fontbonne backline that resulted in an own goal. The Griffins were able to tie the game in the 86th minute as junior Taylor Pratte scored his second goal of the season after junior Josh Schulz served a ball into the box and junior Justin Wiliams headed the ball back across to Pratte for an easy head ball goal.
Greenville however responded just minutes later scoring with 50 seconds left in the game after another defensive mistake led to a nicely played through ball and good finish by Daniel Ruder.
For the game, Fontbonne outshot Greenville 13-8 and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Griffins will return to action Saturday in Louisville, KY against Spalding University.
