Fontbonne junior Josh Schulz scored a goal and added three assists to lead the Griffins to a 4-0 win over MacMurray College yesterday. The victory qualified Fontbonne for the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament for the ninth straight year. The Griffins improved to 12-5-2 overall and 5-3 in the SLIAC.
Fontbonne will now advance to play Webster University Thursday night at 7 pm at Soccer Park in Fenton, MO in SLIAC Tournament. The winner of that game will advance to play in the championship game against the winner of the Greenville College/Westminster College game. The championship game will be held on Saturday at a location and time to be detemined. The winner of the SLIAC Tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Div. III National Tournament.
Yesterday, Fontbonne opened the scoring in the 33rd minute on a goal by sophomore Jordan Flack. Schulz opened the second half by scoring in the opening minute on an unassisted goal. Schulz set up sophomore Tim Menzel in the 51st minute and junior Wesley Laney in the 56th minute to round out the scoring. Sophomore Joey Mirth earned the shutout in goal for the Griffins.
Fontbonne outshot MacMurray 33-1 and held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks. Prior to the game, Fontbonne honored seniors Charlie Chafin, Ethan Kristek, Nick Platipodis and Nick Hellmann.
