The Fontbonne University men's soccer team opened their St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) schedule yesterday defeating Iowa Wesleyan University 4-0. The Griffins improved to 6-4-1 overall and 1-0 in the SLIAC.
Fontbonne senior Taylor Pratte got the Griffins on the board in the 30th minutes when he scored his first goal of the season on an assist from freshman Ben Boyd. Despite outshooting Iowa Wesleyan 14-1, the Griffins took just a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
In the second half, senior Zach Meyer scored a pair of unanswered goals just more than five minutes apart to push the Griffins lead to 3-0. Meyer now leads the Griffins in goals with seven on the season. Senior Zach Schucardt and junior Tim Menzel earned the assists on Meyer's goals. Menzel rounded out Fontbonne's scoring for the day in the 78th minute. Senior Ryan Essenpreiss made his first start in goal for the Griffins and he made two saves in collecting the shutout.
Fontbonne returns to the pitch Monday night as they play at nationally ranked Washinton University at 7:30 pm.
