The Fontbonne University men's soccer team fell to #16 ranked Washington University last night 1-0. The Griffins dropped to 6-5-1 on the season.
Washington University controlled much of the play throughout the first half and was rewarded with the game's lone goal in the 33rd minute. Fontbonne's best chance of the first half came late when a shot by senior Justin Williams was pushed just over the crossbar. The Bears outshot the Griffins 10-4 in the opening 45 minutes.
In the second half, Fontbonne became the aggressor and took much of the play to the Bears. Junior Jason Howard appeared to score the game tying goal early in the second half on a shot that ricocheted down off the crossbar but the referees did not award the Griffins a goal. Fontbonne however continued to take the play to the Bears earning several quality scoring chances. Fontbonne outshot the Bears 10-5 in the second half and held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
For the game, the Bears outshot Fontbonne 15-14 but the Griffins held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Fontbonne returns to the pitch Saturday when they travel to Jacksonville, IL for a 1 pm match against MacMurray College.
