The Fontbonne University men's soccer team won a critical St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) game on Saturday defeating rival Webster University 3-0. The Griffins improved to 9-6-1 overall and 4-1 in the SLIAC.
Fontbonne started fast, scoring just 50 seconds into the match. Senior Taylor Pratte headed a delivery from junior Tim Menzel past the Webster keeper to make it 1-0. The Griffins extended their lead in the 20th minute when Menzel scored his fourth goal of the season. Fontbonne carried that 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Fontbonne senior Zach Meyer scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season in the 60th minute to give the Griffins all the goals they would need to secure the victory.
For the game, Fontbonne and Webster each recorded 12 shots with the Griffins having seven on goal to the Gorloks' 4. Fontbonne held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Ryan Essenpreiss tallied four saves in picking up the shutout for the Griffins.
Fontbonne will return to the pitch Tuesday night as they play Principia College at 5 pm in Elsah, Illinois.
