Schulz leads Griffins to thrilling overtime victory
The Fontbonne University men's soccer team rallied from a man-down and a goal-down with five minutes to go in the game Tuesday night for a 2-1 overtime victory over Principia College. The Griffins improved to 10-6-1 overall and 5-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
After a scoreless first half, Principia took the lead in the 80th minute. Fontbonne lost a man to an unintentional elbow in the 82nd minute. The Griffins however responded in the 84th minute when senior Zach Meyer scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season off a corner kick. Senior Justin Williams recorded the assist on the Meyer goal.
In second overtime, senior Josh Schulz scored on a volley from 20 yards out to earn the Griffins the victory.
For the game, Fontbonne outshot Principia 18-13 and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Essenpreiss made three saves to pick up the victory.
Fontbonne will return to the pitch Saturday when they host Spalding University at 1 pm.
