The Fontbonne University men's soccer team won their second straight overtime game Saturday defeating Spalding University 2-1. The Griffins improved to 11-6-1 overall and 6-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
Fontbonne senior Zach Meyer opened the scoring in the 9th minute when he scored his team leading 13th goal of the season. Senior Josh Schulz assisted on Meyer's goal. Schulz assist was his team leading sixth of the season. The Griffins carried that 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half Spalding tied the game in the 49th minute. Despite both teams creating several opportunities over the next 40 minutes, neither team could find the back of the net.
In overtime, Fontbonne senior Justin Williams scored the game-winner in the 96th minute on an assist from Meyer. It was Williams sixth goal of the season. Meyer now leads the SLIAC in goals (13) and points (28).
For the game, both teams were credited with 14 shots while the Griffins held a 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Griffin senior Ryan Essenpreiss tallied four saves to pick up the win for the Griffins.
Fontbonne returns to the pitch Tuesday night in Greenville, Illinois playing Greenville College at 5 pm.
