The Fontbonne University men's soccer team defeated Blackburn College yesterday to earn a share of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) regular season championship. The Griffins improved to 13-6-1 and finished at 8-1 in the SLIAC.
Fontbonne will share the SLIAC crown with Westminster College and Webster University, who also finished at 8-1. The Griffins now have won seven SLIAC regular season championships and this is their first since 2008.
Due to tiebreaker scenario's, Fontbonne will be the #2 seed in the upcoming SLIAC Tournament. Fontbonne will host #3 seed Webster University on Wednesday at 1 pm. The #1 seed, Westminster College, will host #4 seed Greenville College in the other semifinal. The championship game will be on Friday at a time and location to be determined. The winner of the SLIAC Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Div. III National Soccer Tournament. This is the 10th straight year the Griffins have qualified for the SLIAC Tournament, the longest streak among conference coaches.
Yesterday, Fontbonne senior Zach Meyer scored three goals to bring his team-leading total to 17. Meyer also lead the SLIAC in goals and points (36). Fellow Griffin senior Justin Williams scored a goal and added two assists. Williams' currently has seven goals and six assists for 20 points. Senior Joe Tibbles had a goal and an assist. Senior goalie Zach Will earned the shutout in goal for the Griffins.
Prior to the game, Fontbonne honored 12 Griffins seniors as part of their Senior Day festivities.
