St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne men's soccer hosted the University of Saint Mary (KS) (USM) Spires on Sunday. Both teams were looking for their second win of the season with the Spires prevailing.
Fontbonne jumped out in the first with several close would-be goals. The Griffins got a break on a Spire foul inside the box. Senior Tim Menzel took the shot, scoring his first goal of the year. Menzel power shot the ball to the right lower side of the goal.
USM's fast Kenyan forward Hargraves Gesora was an offensive threat all game. Gesora found the back of the net in the 37th minute. Sloppiness in the backfield gave USM the edge as Tylor Mensik chased down a ball inside the box. He took a desperate shot as two Griffin defenders and goalkeeper Joey Mirth were closing in. Mensik's shot immediate ricocheted off a defender's leg and into the goal for a Spire 2-1 lead at the half.
USM held a 3-1 lead after the Spires scored on a pass from the right baseline. Under a minute later, the Griffins scored off a corner kick. Junior Alex Platipodis struck a swing near the left side of the goal, striking the post. Platipodis got his own rebound, scoring his first collegiate goal of his career.
USM had a beautiful would-be two assist shot that Mirth saved, keeping his team in the game during the 75th minute. It wouldn't be enough as USM scored their final goal in the 87th minute for the 4-2 Griffin loss.
Fontbonne is set to host Millikin University on Wednesday at 8pm.
Austin Willenbrock had a chance to get the Griffins on the scoreboard again from a pass by Phil Gangloff. Willenbrock's shot struck the post, his second post shot of the day.
