The Fontbonne men's soccer team used two second half goals to overcome a one-goal deficit earning a 2-1 road conference win against Blackburn College on Saturday. Fontbonne improved to 3-9 overall and 2-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
The Griffins dominated action in the first half outshooting Blackburn 9-1 with a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. Fontbonne however couldn't solve Beaver keeper Shane Rodgers who tallied six saves in the opening 45 minutes.
In the second half, Blackburn executed a nice counter attack in the 69th minute to go up 1-0. The Griffins however quickly responded when freshman Ryan Dudley scored just three minutes later. Senior Phil Gangloff earned the assist on Dudley's goal. The Griffins continued to press the game and were rewarded in the 87th minute. Freshman Alex Phillips scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season on an assist from senior Aaron Pavese to earn the critical three points.
For the game, Fontbonne outshot Blackburn 23-3 and held a 11-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Fontbonne returns to action Wednesday night in a non-conference game against Washington University. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
