St. Louis, Mo. - The Fontbonne University men's soccer team recorded a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Principia College last night to remain unbeated in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
With miserable weather conditions that included constant rain and wind, both teams were challenged to fight the elements. Neither team found the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes as Principia outshot Fontbonne 6-4.
It didn't take long however in the second half for Fontbonne to change things. Senior Tim Menzel's free kick goal gave the Griffins a 1-0 in the 53rd minute. Principia responded by playing well and earned the equalizer in the 85th minute. The Panthers earned a couple changes late in the game to steal the result but couldn't capitalize.
Just three minutes into overtime, Fontbonne freshman Alex Phillips converted on a breakaway to secure the three points for the Griffins. For Phillips it was his team leading seventh goal of the season.
The Griffins will try to extend their winning streak to three games as they travel to Eureka, Illinois on Saturday for a 3 pm game against Eureka College.
