Elsah, Ill. - Fontbonne men's soccer's hopes for tournament play are still alive after a 3-1 victory of Principia College tonight. The Griffins are 5-3 in conference play and 8-10 overall. Currently Fontbonne sits in fifth place in the standings, but it'll all play out this Saturday when the top four seeds play each other. If the Griffins win their final regular-season game against Iowa Wesleyan, they could finish as high as third place, depending on how the other four teams perform.
Sealing the win tonight against Principia was huge and thanks to sophomore Alex Phillips, Fontbonne can breath a little easier. The forward scored the first two goals for Fontbonne before Kameron Thomas netted his first collegiate goal, adding some extra security for the Griffins. Phillips now totals nine goals on the season including his fourth game-winner.
Fontbonne travels to Iowa Wesleyan this Saturday on Halloween, vying for a SLIAC Tournament appearance in head coach Ricky Andrew's first season at the helm. The Griffins have made it to the tournament each eligible season for the past 15 years. Kickoff is schedule for 1 p.m.
