St. Louis, Mo. The Fontbonne University men's soccer team won their first game of the season defeating MacMurray College 8-0 on Saturday. The Griffins improved to 1-8-1 overall and 1-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
Junior Ryan Dudley scored two goals in the opening 15 minutes to set the tone for the Griffins. Senior Austin Willenbrock tallied his first goal of the season to extend Fontbonne's lead to 3-0 in the 20th minute. Senior Alex Smith recorded the assists on the Griffins second and third goals and just before halftime, junior Alex Phillips buried his first goal of the season to put Fontbonne up 4-0 at halftime.
After the half, Fontbonne picked up right where they left off when junior Cory Schmidt made it 5-0. Dudley finished off his hat trick in the 56th minute and senior Ryan Curran made it 7-0 in the 62nd minute. Senior Steve Pfeifer scored his first career collegiate goal on a PK in the 73rd minute.
Junior Tony Pitaro picked up his first shutout of the season in goal making one save.
Fontbonne returns to the pitch Tuesday night as they host Washington University at 8 p.m.
