St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne men's soccer held No. 8-ranked Washington University scoreless for 76 minutes before the Griffins suffered a 1-0 loss tonight. WashU is Fontbonne's fifth time taking on a ranked team this season. The Griffins sit 1-9-1 as WashU remains unbeaten at 7-0-1.
WashU pressured Fontbonne with possession near the top of the box multiple times throughout the game as they outshot the Griffins 20-5.
Emotions were high with 29 fouls and five yellow cards distributed in the contest.
Junior goalkeeper Tony Pitaro came through multiple times for the Griffins on stuffing multiple WashU crosses. His first one occurred in the eighth minute when he jumped higher and covered the ball as he was surrounded by four Bears on a corner kick.
Pitaro came up big again in the 27th minute as Washu dribbled the ball down the field with three offensive players while the Griffins tried to eliminate the threat with two defenders. Pitaro stopped the shot point blank from the right side.
In the 55th minute, Pitaro cut off a cross which looked like a sure header into the goal. He finished the game with seven saves.
Senior Alex Smith was called for two questionable sliding tackles, which enabled Washu two free-kicks from 20 yards out. Both were blocked by the Griffins' wall.
Fontbonne hosts Iowa Wesleyan on Thursday at 8 p.m. followed by Greenville at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 8th.
