St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne men's soccer senior and captain Alex Smith scored his first goal of the season in the seventh minute as the Griffins went on to defeat Iowa Wesleyan University 6-0. The win lifts Fontbonne over the .500 mark in conference play as they gear towards hosting Greenville College at 3 p.m. on Saturday October 8th.
Junior Ryan Dudley blasted a shot that hit the left post and rebounded to Smith, waiting near the left center of the goal. Smith placed the shot for his fifth career goal. He would score again in the 43rd minute from a backwards pass from junior Nick Wolf.
Sophomore Matt Rapisardo also notched his first goal of the season after working the ball around a Tiger defender and placing the ball into the back of the net to give Fontbonne a 2-0 lead.
Rapisardo would connect with Wolf in the 55th minute as Wolf then scored his first goal of the season as well. Corey Schmidt sent a nice long pass that found Austin Willenbrock on the right side of the field. Sprinting, Willenbrock buried his scond goal of the year in the 75th minute.
Senior Shay Garner's penalty kick was good in the 86th minute giving the St. Louis native his second career goal to close out scoring in the game.
Goalkeeper Tony Pitaro made five saves in the game including a sliding save near the top left of the box in the 78th minute that stuffed Iowa Wesleyan's Tristen Dickerson and preserved his first shutout of the year.
