Carlinville, Ill. - On their last road trip of the regular season, Fontbonne men's soccer took the title of the SLIAC's Game of the Week with their 2-1 victory over Blackburn. The win puts the Griffins at 5-1 in conference, a second place standing behind 5-0 Spalding and just ahead of 4-1 Webster. Next Saturday will be a pivotal matchup as Fontbonne travels to Webster for a 3 p.m. contest.
Blackburn struck first and early. The Beavers scored in the second minute of play before junior Nick Wolf tied the game on a penalty kick in the 38th minute.
Wolf then assisted junior Alex Phillips' game winner in the 77th minute. Tony Pitaro saved four in net for Fontbonne while the Griffins' offense recorded 22 shots to Blackburn's nine. It was a heated battle as the teams combined for 40 fouls, Fontbonne tallying 25 of those. The Griffins also held a 4-0 corner kick advantage.
