MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The Fontbonne University men's soccer team picked up its second straight win on Saturday as they defeated Hendrix, 3-0.
"The guys gutted out a spirited effort," said head coach Donnie Alberty. "We obviously didn't play our best, but those are the type of matches you have to win if you want to be a top program. We are a little tired with this being our fourth match in eight days, travel included. We will continue to work on some details and get better. Spirits are definitely high right now."
Fontbonne (3-1), totaled eight shots in the win, while getting goals from David Keeven, Nick Wolf, and Blake Smugala. In goal, Jordan Alberici picked up another win after making four saves.
It was all FBU from the opening whistle with Wolf having a shot at goal in the 14th minute, but Warriors goalie Nathan Myers came up with the save.
That story wouldn't be the same two minutes later with Keeven scoring for the second straight game, off an assist from Wolf to make it 1-0.
The Warriors picked up the pace the rest of the half, outshooting the Griffins 5-1 in the final 31:00 minutes of play, however, going into the break FBU led 1-0.
In the second half, the back-and-forth play continued until Fontbonne put the game away for good. In the 62nd minute, Wolf scored his second of the year, unassisted to give FBU a 2-0 lead. Then, less than a minute later, Alex Phillips found Smugala who scored his first on the season, extending the advantage out to 3-0.
Hendrix tried to get back into the game late, but with the defense holding strong and Alberici coming up with the timely saves, the Griffins went on for the shutout win.
The team will be right back at it tomorrow afternoon when they'll take on host Rhodes. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m.
