Alberty Named SLIAC Coach Of The Year; Six Griffins Earn All-Conference Honors
ST. LOUIS, Mo.— At the conclusion of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Men’s Soccer Championship game, they announced All-Conference honors and the Griffins were awarded plenty of hardware.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.— At the conclusion of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Men's Soccer Championship game, they announced All-Conference honors and the Griffins were awarded plenty of hardware.
First year head coach Donnie Alberty took home a well-deserved Coach of the Year award, while Greg Ferry (First Team), Corey Schmidt (First Team), Jordan Alberici (First Team), Nick Wolf (Second Team), Blake Smugala (Second Team) and Nick Nelson (Third Team) earned All-Conference honors. Schmidt and Tony Pitaro were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
In his first season at the helm, guiding the team to its first outright SLIAC Regular Season Title since 2008, Alberty was named Coach of the Year, becoming the third coach in Griffins history to win the award.
Ferry, an Ayr, Scotland, native, was named to the All-Conference First Team and Co-Defensive Player of the Year with Justin Schmidt (Webster). Ferry, led the Griffins defense line that allowed just 20 goals on the year. He himself had a career season with seven goals and one assist for 15 points.
Schmidt, who broke out offensively, was also named to the First Team, after he tied his career-high with three goals and set a new-career-high with nine assists for 15 points. He'll close out his Griffin career playing in 77 games, totaling 11 goals and 14 assists for 36 points.
Alberici, dominated in net after appearing in 10 games, totaling 799:51 minutes played, a goals against average of 0.56, a save percentage of .848 and nine wins. Those career-high stats for the senior placed him on the SLIAC First Team.
At forward, Wolf, will take home Second Team hardware as he set a new career-high for himself with seven goals and 17 points. He'll finish out his collegiate career with FBU having 12 goals and six assists for 30 points. Joining him on the Second Team is midfielder Smugala and he led the midfield with six goals and four assists on 54 shots.
Nelson, meanwhile, was named to the Third Team as a defenseman and he concluded the season with one assist on seven shot attempts.
