Griffins Dealt Its First Loss On The Season Against Dominican
RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Fontbonne University men’s soccer team hoped to close out the weekend unbeaten against two quality teams, however, the Dominican Stars kept the Griffins off the board en route to a 2-0 win.
RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Fontbonne University men's soccer team hoped to close out the weekend unbeaten against two quality teams, however, the Dominican Stars kept the Griffins off the board en route to a 2-0 win.
The Griffins (1-1), finished with seven shots on the day as Bryan Carroll led with two. In net, Erik Volk stood out making seven saves on nine shots on goal.
The Stars (2-0), meanwhile, rounded out the day with 16 shots. The team got its goals from Denis Soldo and Alexander Lulek. In goal, Daniel Dominguez picked up the win.
In the first, the Stars got the ball inside the box in the 7th minute. Jonathan Hernandez hit a low cross to the far post for Soldo and he kicked it in to make it 1-0. Each team had three shots over the next 15 minutes until the Stars struck again.
After a foul was called on the Griffins, Hernandez hit another low cross into the box and found a cutting Lulek. He was able to get his foot on it and hit the ball past Volk extending the lead out to 2-0.
A little over a minute later, the Stars were called for a foul at the top of the box. Andres Castro took the attempt, but his shot went off the crossbar and out of play.
Dominican kept up its offensive pressure, though Volk stopped four more shots to keep it a two-goal deficit for the Griffins.
In the second half, the Griffins had another scoring chance at 61:41. Off a free-kick, Julian Johnson had a chance for goal with a header, but his attempt went just wide on the near post.
Despite the efforts of the team, the Stars fended off Fontbonne the rest of the way to secure the two-goal victory.
Fontbonne returns to action this Saturday against Franklin in Crawfordsville, Ind. Kick-off at 12 p.m.
