ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University men's soccer team hosted Knox in its home opener, but the Prairie Fire held the Griffins offense in check for the 3-0 win.
"I thought we played well the first 10-15 minutes," said head coach Donnie Alberty. "We found something we thought was going to work and then for some reason we didn't take advantage of it. After that, we kind of sat back and let them take the play to us a little bit. In the second half, we just lacked the intensity it takes to win at this level. You have to give Knox credit because they took advantage of it and kept coming at us in waves."
Alberty continued, "I think that we realize that we can play much better and I'd expect us to turn around on Sunday and play much harder. If we don't, then other guys will start to get more opportunities and we will find the 11 guys that want it most."
Fontbonne (2-3), was limited to a season-low three shots. In goal, Eric Volk made a career-high nine saves.
Knox (3-2-1), meanwhile, posted 26 shots and scored three second-half goals from Joey Dorgan, Jake Totty, and Nick Janulis. In goal, Justin Dunn made three saves.
In the first half, the Prairie Fire outshot the Griffins 12-2, however, neither team found twine after 45:00 minutes of action.
In the second frame, at the 68:41 mark, Totty raced up the left side of the field. He passed the ball on over in the box for Joey Dorgan and his shot went off a sliding Griffins player to make it 1-0.
The Prairie Fire tacked on another goal 11:00 minutes later as Totty lifted his shot over Volk, extending the advantage to 2-0. Knox scored once more in the 89th minute to give them the three-goal win.
The Griffins return to action this Sunday on the road against Illinois College. Kick-off at 2 p.m.
