LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Fontbonne University men's soccer team saw its three-game win streak gets snapped in overtime against Spalding on Tuesday as the Griffins fell 3-2 (OT).
Fontbonne (6-7; 3-1 SLIAC), totaled 16 shots as Marc Roellig led with four. Andres Castro scored for the third straight game, while Jared Lyeki netted his second on the season. In net, Drew Blair made four saves.
The Golden Eagles (10-2-1; 3-0-1 SLIAC), compiled 16 shots in the victory. Individually, Kornell Hilliard, Mirza Ugarak, and Abnel St. Fleur all scored. In goal, Trevor Massa stayed perfect at 4-0 after posting six saves.
In the first, the Golden Eagles got on the board first as Kornell Hilliard scored his 14th on the season at the 9:04 mark.
Four minutes later, though the Griffins answered right back. Brendan Kopff crossed the ball into the box for Bryan Carroll and he tipped it back for Castro. The Farmington, Mo., native, fended off a Spalding defender and beat Massa to the far post for his fourth on the year.
That score remained the same until 24:33 as the Golden Eagles were awarded a free-kick. Ugarak stepped up and ripped his shot past Blair to give the home team a 2-1 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Griffins took advantage of a Spalding defensive miscue in the 51st minute. A defender tried to pass the ball back to Massa, but a miss-hit allowed Carrol cut the goalie off from the ball and pass it towards Jared Lyeki, who scored into the open net, tying the game at 2-2.
Each team had its fair amount of scoring chances the rest of the way, but neither could break the tie so it was off to overtime.
In OT, Carroll had a shot out of the gate, but his attempt was saved by Massa. Then, at 97:08, Hilliard headed the ball into the box for St. Fleur and he scored the game-winner into the bottom left corner for the Golden Eagles.
Fontbonne looks to bounce back on the road this Saturday at Blackburn. Kick-off is slated for 3 p.m.
