ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 (2OT) heartbreaker against Westminster on Wednesday night.
With 47.0 seconds remaining the Blue Jays (4-9-1; 3-2-1 SLIAC) were awarded a corner-kick. Justin Gerdiman stepped into it and found the head of Joshua Udinyiwe as he beat Drew Blair to give them the 1-0 victory.
The Griffins (7-8; 4-2 SLIAC), outshot Westminster 17-12 in the outing. Brandon Baumgartner led with four shots, while Blair made five saves in net.
On the other side of the pitch, the Blue Jays got a solid outing of Connor Bandre' in net as he made seven saves. Brandon Rettke led the team with five shots.
Fontbonne controlled the pace of the first half with a shot advantage of 8-3, but Bandre' came away with three saves to keep it a scoreless game after one.
In the second, the Griffins had a couple of early scoring chances, though Brendan Kopff's and Nick Wolf's attempts were saved.
Both teams were stout defensively the rest of the way as neither team could find a good look on net. The Griffins had one final shot on goal as Baumgartner sent a line drive shot from 25-plus yards out, however, his attempt was just high and it was off to OT.
In the first OT, the Griffins had a late scoring chance off the foot of Zack Lyeki, but his attempt went wide left. It looked as if the game was going to end as a 0-0 tie with under a minute left in the second OT. The Blue Jays went on to spoil the Griffins return home on Udinyiwe's goal for the win.
Fontbonne looks to bounce back on Saturday in another tough match-up against Iowa Wesleyan. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m., on Senior Day.
