How It Happened
It was a scoreless game early in the first half, but the Griffins were able to break through. In the 21st minute, Jarid Morton crossed the ball into the middle of the box for Mike Massay, and the junior forward was able to beat the Hornets net-minder to the far post and give Fontbonne the 1-0 lead.
Fontbonne went on to have a 6-5 shot advantage the rest of the way and went into the break on top, 1-0.
In the second half, the Hornets outshot Fontbonne 10-2, but with Eric Volk and the defense standing tall the Griffins were able to hang on for the win.
Coach Alberty Thoughts:
"The early part of the season is always about growth, development, and guys figuring out their role. We have been battling some injuries and illness. So getting the result today is good, but we realize that we need to get better. I was very impressed with how much better Harris-Stowe has gotten over the last couple of years and they outplayed us for stretches today. From that standpoint, today as a little bit of a smash and grab, but you always take any points you can get at the college level."
