How It Happened
After being held scoreless the last two games, the Griffins offense came out with a sense of urgency. It paid off early as Jarid Morton received a pass and found Mike Massay up top.
The forward got behind the Vikings defense and netted his third on the year in the fourth minute to give Fontbonne the 1-0 lead. Both teams had scoring chances the rest of the half, but the Griffins were able to maintain its 1-0 advantage at the break.
In the 48th minute of the second half, the Vikings were able to strike back. Bradley Sisk was able to head the ball on for Jake Williamson and he scored the equalizer.
The Vikings continued its offense pressure and it paid off in the 68th minute. After carrying the ball down the right side, JP Phillips crossed the ball into the box, and Williamson was there to net his second of the game.
However, that lead was short-lived. In the 72nd minute, the Vikings were called for a foul just outside the box. Jared Lyeki took the free kick, his shot went off the bottom of the cross bar, and into the net to tie the game.
As the clock continued to tick away the Griffins had one final chance on net with a loose ball finding Zack Lyeki, though his attempt went wide and it was off to overtime.
In the first OT, the best chance came at the 99:14 mark when Henry Arato's shot attempt went off the post. In the second OT, the Vikings outshot Fontbonne 2-1, but neither team scored the game-winner, and it ended in a 2-2 tie.
Coach Alberty Thoughts:
"I thought that was an exciting college soccer match. Both teams battled and didn't back down. We know Berry is a good program and would provide a tough test. That is the type of matches we schedule in order to get ready for conference play. We did a good job tonight of raising our intensity level and giving the effort that it takes to be successful."
"I was a little disappointed in our inability to remain composed. This is supposed to be stressful, so we must do a better job of maintaining our heads and focusing on the task at hand. It's pretty simple. That will get better or guys will be sitting on the bench. But overall we improved as a team tonight and hopefully we can continue to improve on Sunday."
