ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University men's soccer team earned a bounce back win on Tuesday night after knocking off unbeaten Iowa Wesleyan, 2-1.
How It Happened
It was a scoreless contest up until the eighth minute when a foul was called on Iowa Wesleyan. After a free kick from Fontbonne, the ball was almost headed out of play but Tanner Harris kept it in, headed it onto Trent Calvert who passed it on over to Jarid Morton and he was right there to bury it to give them a 1-0 lead.
Iowa Wesleyan tested Fontbonne goalie netminder Ethan Cowell over the next several minutes but he kept the Griffins lead intact. However, the Tigers finally broke through in the 36th minute when Francisco Javier Saldana found Xavier Lozada and he beat Cowell on the far side to tie the game prior to halftime.
In the second half, another foul was called on Iowa Wesleyan, this time in the penalty box which awarded a penalty-kick to Fontbonne at 54:15. Trent Calvert stepped up and scored to give Fontbonne a 2-1 lead.
The Tigers outshot Fontbonne 9-4 in the second half but the Griffins defense and Cowell stood tall in the final minutes fending off an offensive push from Iowa Wesleyan for the one goal victory.
Hear from Head Coach, Donnie Alberty
"So proud of my guys and the effort we gave tonight. That was our ninth game and eight of them were decided by one goal, with no ties. That's a strange stat, but it means we are battle tested. We've given up goals late in games, including the loss this past Saturday, so it was important for us to hold on to a lead and close the game out."
"Hopefully we can build off of this and have another good performance Saturday."
