ELSAH, Ill.—The Fontbonne University men's soccer team fended off Principia on Tuesday night for the 1-0 win.
The scoring got started for the Griffins in the 10th minute when Ian Steinkamp scored his first of the season. Two minutes later, the Griffins attempted to make it a 2-0 game but Ryan Schwentker's attempt was saved by Jacob Ellis.
The Panthers had a scoring chance in the 21st minute, however, Wizzy Afrani's shot went off the crossbar. Despite being outshot 8-3 in the first, the Griffins maintained a 1-0 lead after one half of action.
In the second half, the Panthers upped the pressure and were awarded a penalty kick in the 84th minute. However, E.G. Pierce's shot was saved by Dominic Haggard keeping the lead intact. Principia pressed for two more late shots, but Haggard stopped them both for the win.
