Bio

Josh Sellmeyer is in his first year on the Fontbonne University men’s soccer coaching staff and ninth year coaching college men’s soccer. He joins the Griffins’ program after a successful eight-year stint at Webster University, a fellow St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member.

At Fontbonne, Sellmeyer’s duties will include recruiting, scouting, daily practice planning, academic advising, managing apparel/equipment and day-to-day operations. He will help coordinate the Griffins’ defensive structure and backline.

Sellmeyer spent the previous eight seasons on Mike Siener’s coaching staff at Webster University and the last four as the team’s associate head coach. Webster compiled a 98-40-15 overall record and 61-13-8 conference record during Sellmeyer’s tenure.

The Gorloks captured three consecutive SLIAC regular-season championships from 2020-2022 and won two SLIAC Tournament titles ('20, '21). Webster produced its best season in team history in 2021, going 18-2-2 overall and 13-0-1 in SLIAC action. The 18 wins and 15 shutouts recorded shattered the previous school records. The Gorloks progressed to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

In 2022, Webster earned its program-best regional ranking and received the SLIAC Team Sportsmanship Award. The Gorloks continued a three-year streak of 38 straight SLIAC games without incurring a loss. Webster did not trail in any of its 14 matches in 2021 with the lone loss coming in double overtime.

Siener was selected SLIAC Coach of the Year four times in an eight-year stretch. Academically, the team averaged better than a 3.3 GPA from 2018 to 2022. The program had the most SLIAC All-Academic student-athletes of any team in the conference in 2021.

Under Sellmeyer’s guidance, Webster posted goals-against averages of 0.65, 0.67, 0.34, 0.78, 0.63 and 0.98 the previous six seasons. Sellmeyer was named interim head coach of the program in 2023.

Sellmeyer’s coaching career at Webster followed a four-year playing career for the Gorloks’ men’s soccer program. Sellmeyer — who captained the team his final two seasons — was the 2012 SLIAC Player of the Year. He was named to the All-Central Region second team and Scholar All-North/Central Region second team that year.

He anchored a defense that recorded 10 shutouts in 20 games en route to a SLIAC regular-season championship, SLIAC Tournament title and NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. Sellmeyer was twice named to the All-Conference first team ('11, '12) and twice helped the Gorloks win the SLIAC Tournament and qualify for the NCAA D-III Tournament. He ranks 11th in Webster career history with 61 games started.

Sellmeyer was additionally a four-year member of the Webster men’s tennis team. He helped the program to its best season in 2013, as the Gorloks went 19-3 and claimed their first outright SLIAC regular-season championship.

Sellmeyer has the highest winning percentage in both singles (.914; 32-3 record) and doubles (.750; 36-12 record) in WU history. He was selected to the All-Conference first team for singles in 2012 and 2013. For doubles, he was picked to the All-Conference first team in 2013 and All-Conference second team in 2011.

He has coached boys’ tennis at Kirkwood High School, Mehlville High School and De Smet Jesuit High School. He has also coached girls’ tennis at Ursuline Academy. Sellmeyer is the summer camp director of Top Performance Tennis Academy. He runs USTA St. Louis junior tennis tournaments and writes for the USTA St. Louis and USTA Missouri districts.

Sellmeyer graduated from Webster in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in media communications. He writes website content for Intergetik Marketing Solutions. Sellmeyer lives in St. Louis with his wife, Rachel, and Golden Retriever, Lola.
