Men's Volleyball Wins First Game of Season
St. Louis- Their first night in New York, men's volleyball showed they were ready despite the long distance travelled. The Griffins put up a hard fight and took down York College 27-25, 28-26, 19-25 and 25-19 for their first win of the 2014 season.
After the first two points of the match went in favor of the York College Cardinals, Fontbonne posted the following four points and would lead for almost the rest of the set. York College pushed back after the Griffins were leading 22-19, scoring five straight points taking a 24-22 game-point advantage. Fontbonne came out on top after a team block by Justin Winkelmann and Peter Hibbler (27-25).
Fontbonne managed to win the second set after both teams fought hard trying to gain control. The largest lead of two points was only held twice before the Griffins (trailing by one) put up three points in a row to end the match 28-26.
York College controlled the entire third set, leading by as many as six points. The Cardinals jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the fourth set when the Griffins posted eight points in a row for a 12-8 advantage. The Cardinals were able to tie the game at 19, but Fontbonne closed out the game, scoring the final six points in a row to win.
Hibbeler was on fire at the net with three solo blocks, nine block assists and nine kills on 14 attempts for a .571 hitting percentage. Winkelmann assisted 32 times with six kills, five digs and eight block assists while junior Aaron Graue totaled 14 kills and eights digs.
York College's .040 hitting percentage, thanks to Fontbonne's blocking attempts at the net, lowered the Cardinals' chances. Bryan Williams led with 12 kills and six digs. Also totaling 12 kills was Randy Adams.
Tonight's contest against has been cancelled due to the ice and snow hitting the Northeast.
