Men's Volleyball loses fourth consecutive game
St. Louis- Fontbonne men's volleyball drops two Continental Volleyball Conference matches this past weekend. The Griffins fell to #6 Carthage College 14-25, 14-25, 19-25 and to Dominican University (Ill.) 18-25, 31-33, 22-25. Fontbonne is 0-5 in conference play and stands 6-7 overall.
Carthage
Carthage's offense at the net averaged 38.3% over all three sets as the Griffin defense was unable to stop the high-powered Red Men. Jim Schultz totaled 14 kills while J.P. Tulaka put down six kills on eight attempts for a 75% attack average. Justin Rujawitz connected with four kills on six attempts for the highest Griffin attacking percentage. Justin Winkelmann finished with 21 assists against the Red Men.
Dominican
With the first set tied at 15, Dominican went on a 10-3 run to close out the set.During the second set, the Griffins were leading 19-11 before Dominican was able to pull within one point (20-19), coming out on top 33-31. Fontbonne led 12-10 in the final set before Dominican took the lead, controlling until the Griffins tied the set at 22. Dominican scored the final three points to close the match.
Winklemann's 43 assists couldn't give Fontbonne the edge along with his six kills on 12 attempts. Aaron Graue totaled 20 kills on the afternoon with Peter Hibbler adding another 11.
Overall, Dominican's front lines at the net were connecting well with the ball on attack, but also at the net with 8.5 total team blocks compared to Fontbonne's five. Zachery Sinn accumulated 18 kills for Dominican with Alex Coyne adding 39 assists.
Fontbonne is at home this weekend for a conference game against Lakeland on Friday at 7pm with a game against MSOE following on Saturday at 3pm.
