Benedictine evens Griffins' MCVL record
Fontbonne is now 1-1 in the MCVL after defeating Loras Saturday and falling to Benedictine Sunday.
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne men's volleyball got off to a rough start in their 14-25, 25-27, 20-25 loss at home against Benedictine University this afternoon. The Griffins are now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference.
Benedictine hit .348 in the first set while the Griffins barely held a positive kill percentage (0.034) in their roughest start of the year. Second-set accuracy wasn't much better but Fontbonne pulled out to an 11-8 led after a terrific dig by Zach Rothstein led to a kill by Brendon Schwartze. Benedictine edged back but the Griffins led 24-22 on a kill by TJ Vorva before the Eagles tied the game. Benedictine was looking for set-point after they took their first lead since they led 17-16. The Eagles closed out the second set on a controversial set/kill combination.
The Griffins led 11-9 after the Lendy twins connected for a kill. Benedictine took over with a 16-15 lead until Fontbonne briefly held an 18-17 advantage. The Eagles closed out the game on an 8-2 run.
Stephen Lendy led Fontbonne with 13 kills while Vorva hit .312. Rothstein tallied 18 digs as the libero was on the end of 45 serve reception attempts. Kyler can Rossum-O'Connell assisted 22 times while James Sauermann and Schwartze recorded four blocks each.
The Griffins are on the road at Greenville for a divisional matchup on Wednesday. First serve is schedule for 7 p.m. Fontbonne is back at home this weekend for a Friday night divisional match against Marian at 7 pm. followed by a conference matchup against Adrian at 10 a.m. Saturday.
