Men's Volleyball takes down Greenville on the road
Smiles all around as men's volleyball defeats their closest MCVL opponent, Greenville College, on the road 3-1.
Greenville, Ill. - Fontbonne men's volleyball travelled to Greenville College and after losing the first set 22-25, the Griffins rebounded to take the rivaly win 32-30, 25-23, 25-23. The MCVL win puts Fontbonne 2-1 in the conference and 2-1 in the West Division as the Griffins are now 5-2 overall. Greenville is 0-4 on the year.
Fontbonne led 17-13 in the second set before Greenville took over the lead after five straight points. The set would hold 11 ties before the final point. Greenville held a 24-23 advantage until a service error gave the Griffins a fighting chance which Stephen Lendy answered with a service ace. Freshman setter Kyler van Rossum-O'Connell laid down a kill to keep Greenville from winning to even the score at 30 points. Fontbonne evened the match with two straight points.
In the third set, Fontbonne trailed 10-13 until once again Lendy served up an ace to give the visitors an 18-17 advantage. A block by Emir Hadzisalihovic and Lendy gave the Griffins a 24-22 lead. Greenville scored their 23rd point of the set but the duo combined for another block to give Fontbonne the 2-1 advantage.
Fontbonne scored five straight points to lead 7-3 in the fourth set. Greenville tied the game 11-11 but then Fontbonne took a 19-13 lead as the Panthers could never gain the regain a lead. Brendon Schwartze finished the win on a kill.
In the game, Lendy recorded 15 kills while Schwartze tallied 10 kills. James Sauermann hit .429 in the match while he also recorded one solo block and seven block assists. Schwartze recorded seven block assists as well while Hadzisalihovic notched four blocks assists. Recent MCVL Player of the Week, Zach Rothstein, tallied 11 digs while Rossum-O'Connell recorded 26 assists.
Fontbonne hit the highest set kill percentage in the second set, registering a team average of .333. The Griffins out-killed the Panthers 46-38 while recording 12 total blocks and seven service aces.
Fontbonne is at home this weekend, with a game Friday night against Marian at 7 p.m. followed by Adrian on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
