Sweep of Mount Mercy snaps men's volleyball losing streak
Fontbonne men's volleyball took down NAIA Mount Mercy University tonight 25-16, 25-23 and 25-22. The win snaps a five-game losing streak as the Griffins improve to 9-6 on the season.
Fontbonne took a 16-11 lead until Mount Mercy pulled within three (18-15). The Griffins scored four straight points to lead by seven, on their way to a 7-1 run.
In the second set, the Griffins trailed almost the entire set, except for several ties. Fontbonne was down 21-17 until they won on an 8-2 run.
In the third set, the Griffins trailed 7-6 until they led 9-7 and led until Mount Mercy took a 14-13 lead. That lead was short lived and the final time the Mustangs would hold an advantage. Fontbonne led by just one point (21-20) until three straight points put them in prime position for victory. Two Fontbonne attack errors gave the Mustangs two more points but they wouldn't get any closer.
Brendon Schwartze tallied eight kills and a .261 hitting percentage to lead the Griffins at the net. Freshman libero Zach Rothstein held together the defense with 16 digs.
Fontbonne is away next weekend, playing at Wittenberg Friday night and Mount St. Joseph Saturday. They return home after a month on the road to host MSOE on Friday, March 10th at 5 p.m.
