No. six-ranked Carthage hits .453 as Griffins earn 10th conference loss
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University men's volleyball dropped their 10th conference game of the season this afternoon as they fell to No. 6-ranked Carthage College 25-18, 25-15, 25-12. Fontbonne is now 9-11 overall while the Red Men improve to 14-1 and are undefeated at 12-0 in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League.
The Red Men came out strong and hit .453 over the course of the contest as they also tallied 9.5 total team blocks compared to Fontbonne's three. Second-set action was close as the Griffins tied the game 12-12, but Carthage scored seven unanswered points to pull ahead 2-0 after a 13-3 run. In the third set, Fontbonne trailed 8-4 before Carthage put up an 11-3 run. The Griffins didn't give up. After trailing 21-9, Fontbonne scored four straight points but the Red Men retaliated by scoring the next four points for the win.
Junior Jacob Lendy hit .600 from the back row. He tallied four kills on five attacks. Kyler van Rossum-O'Connell notched 23 assists in the loss while he and Stephen Lendy each recorded nine digs.
Fontbonne moves past this weekend and looks ahead to a rivalry matchup Tuesday when Greenville College comes to St. Louis at 7 p.m. This year, Fontbonne already defeated the Panthers away 3-1 with the second set score 32-30. Next week is Fontbonne's last two matches of the season at home, followed by Olivet College on Saturday.
