Griffins Record Its 12th Straight Set Win On The Year Against Widener

CHESTER, Pa.—The Fontbonne University men's volleyball team cruised past Widener for its second straight sweep (25-16, 25-22, 25-22) to start its trip out east.
The Griffins (15-5), ended with 41 kills, a .306 hitting percentage and 41 digs. Grant Garza stood out with a career-high 10 kills and .333 hitting percentage. Kolin Scharnhorst also stood out with his nine kill, .227 hitting percentage and five dig performance.
Jacob Lendy handed out 29 assists and finished with a team-high 12 digs, while Zach Rothstein contributed 11 digs of his own.
The Pride (1-13), concluded with 31 kills and were paced by Wil Cicciatore's 13 kills. A.J. Sungenis added 11 kills, six digs and two block assists. Bill Barclay finished with 26 assists and Connor Johnson led Widener on the defensive side of the net with 11 digs.
In the first set, the Griffins took a 13-9 lead on Josh Farley's kill. They expanded its advantage out to 20-14 on TJ Vorva's kill and never looked back from there as they went on for the 25-16 win.
It was more of the same dominance in the second set. The Griffins took an 11-7 lead with James Sauermann slamming home the kill. Later, a bad set by Widener put Fontbonne ahead 20-13 and that forced The Pride staff to take a timeout.
Out of the break, they went on a 4-0 run to cut the deficit down to 24-22, though another bad set gave Fontbonne the 25-22 victory.
In the third, a block assist from Garza and Sauermann put Fontbonne on top, 11-6. They stretched it out to 18-10 on Scharnhorst's kill and that made Widener's coaching staff call another timeout.
The Pride answered with another 4-0 run and trailed by two (21-19) on Sungenis' kill. However, despite its efforts, the Griffins fended off Widener, capped off by Scharnhorst's kill and that gave Fontbonne the 25-22 set and match win.
The team will play two more matches tomorrow starting at 12 p.m. First-up is Misericordia, followed by a 2 p.m., outing against Hunter.
