Griffins Tie Program Record In Wins Against New Jersey City
JERSEY CITY, NJ.—The Fontbonne University men’s volleyball team tied the program-record in wins (17) on Friday with a sweep (25-13, 25-21, 25-14) over New Jersey City.
JERSEY CITY, NJ.—The Fontbonne University men's volleyball team tied the program-record in wins (17) on Friday with a sweep (25-13, 25-21, 25-14) over New Jersey City.
The Griffins (17-6), found plenty of success offensively with 39 kills and a .329 hitting percentage. Brendon Schwartze led with a match-high 10 kills, .600 hitting percentage and added nine digs.
Josh Farley contributed seven kills and a .462 hitting percentage, while Braden Woolsey continued to play well with six kills and a .857 hitting percentage in two sets.
Kyler van Rossum-O'Connell dished out a season-high 29 assists in three sets of action, while Zach Rothstein earned 11 digs.
The Gothic Knights (7-14), were limited to 22 kills and a .065 hitting percentage after committing 17 errors. J.J. Beredecia led with a team-high six kills. Alexander Umanzor and Jimmy Vega handed out nine assists each, while David Penaherrera finished with nine digs.
In the first set, the Griffins capped off a 4-0 run to take a 13-5 lead on Stephen Lendy's kill. The team cruised on from there for the 25-13 win.
In the second, it was the Gothic Knights taking a 12-9 lead on Jimmy Vega's service ace. Later, New Jersey City led 19-18, though the Griffins responded with a 5-0 run as a block assist from Farley and James Sauermann gave them the 23-19 lead.
The Gothic Knights cut it down to 23-21, however, the Griffins collected the final two points on Farley's kill and an attack error for the 25-21 victory.
It was all Fontbonne once more in the third. The team took a 10-6 lead on Grant Garza's kill. They expanded the advantage out to 16-7 on Schwartze's kill. From there, the Griffins displayed a dominant performance for the 25-14 set and match win.
The team closes out its trip out east tomorrow morning. First-up at 10 a.m., is Cairn, followed by a 12 p.m., outing against Lehman.
