Griffins Set Season-High Mark In Digs After Win Over Saints

ALLIANCE, Ohio.—The Fontbonne University men's volleyball continued its unbeaten streak in 2019 after a sweep (25-16, 25-18, 25-19) win over Thomas More.
The Griffins (5-0), posted 38 kills, a .262 hitting percentage and set a new season-high in a three-set match with 45 digs.
Individually, Mark Klusman led them offensively with 12 kills and a .240 hitting percentage. Braden Woolsey had nine kills contributed nine kills and a .467 hitting percentage, while Kyler van Rossum-O'Connell had 26 assists.
Thomas More (1-10), ended the night with 21 kills and a .023 hitting percentage. The Saints also had its struggles with 11 service errors. Nick Richard and Robby Cox tied with six kills each. Tanner Miller dished out 11 assists and Andy Geigle contributed six digs.
In the first set, the Griffins opened with a commanding 11-7 lead. After the Saints trimmed it down to 11-9, the Griffins rattled off a quick 5-0 run as Woolsey's service ace gave them a 16-9 lead. From there, the team maintained its lead and went on for the 25-16 win.
It was a dominant performance in the first set by Fontbonne with 10 kills and a match-high .318 hitting percentage. The Saints, meanwhile, had its struggles with eight kills and eight errors for .000 hitting percentage.
In the second set, it was the Saints this time around owning a 15-10 lead on a Griffins service error. Fontbonne found its rhythm and regained the lead at 18-17 to force a Saints timeout.
Out of the break, Thomas More tied it on a Fontbonne service error, but Fontbonne closed out the set on a 7-0 run with Woolsey leading with three kills to give them the 25-18 win.
Fontbonne posted a match-high 16 kills in the second, while the Saints were held to a match-low five and another .000 hitting percentage.
In the third, Fontbonne took a 10-6 lead on a kill from Grant Garza. Later, the team stretched it out to 20-13 and went on for the 25-19 set and match win.
The team returns to action bright and early tomorrow when they'll play three matches starting at 8 a.m., against Thiel. At 10 a.m., they'll take on host Mount Union and will close out the day against Penn St.-Altoona at 12 p.m.
