(RV) Griffins Secure No. 2 Spot In MCVL Tournament After Sweeping Past Adrian

ADRIAN, Mich.—The (RV) Fontbonne University men's volleyball team swept past Adrian on Saturday to secure the No. 2 spot in the MCVL Tournament next weekend. It'll be the first time in program history the Griffins have made the tournament.

Score: Fontbonne 3, Adrian 0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-21)

Records: Fontbonne 23-2 (7-2 MCVL), Adrian (16-14, 4-5 MCVL)

How It Happened

In the first set, the Griffins opened with a 16-11 lead on a block assist from Emir Hadzisalihovic and Brendon Schwartze.

The Bulldogs cut it down to 20-18 on a kill from Noah Marcinkowski, but the Griffins fended off Adrian the rest of the way with another block assist from Schwartze and Hadzisalihovic to make it a 25-20 final.

After Adrian held the early lead in the second set, the two teams met-up at 13-13. Fontbonne rattled off a 3-0 run and expanded its lead out to 22-15 on a solo block assist from Braden Woolsey. The team outscored the Bulldogs 3-1 en route to the 25-16 victory on Woolsey's kill.

In the third, the Griffins jumped out to a 15-10 advantage on a Josh Farley kill. Adrian kept battling, though and tied it up at 20-20 on Mike Gold's kill. However, the Griffins ended the set on a 5-1 run, capped off by Hadzisalihovic's kill for the 25-21 set and match win.

Inside The Numbers

• Fontbonne finished with 40 kills and a. 354 hitting percentage.
• The 16 block assists tie a season-high.
• Adrian finished with 41 kills and a .144 hitting percentage.

Fontbonne Leaders

• Hadzisalihovic, Mark Klusman, Farley, and Schwartze all had nine kills. Schwartze led with a match-high .571 hitting percentage.
• Kyler van Rossum-O'Connell handed out 36 assists and Zach Rothstein led with seven digs.

Adrian Leaders

• Noah Marcinkowski posted a match-high 14 kills on a .258 hitting percentage.
• Kevin Curley led the group defensively with eight digs.

Up Next

• The Griffins return to action next Friday in the MCVL Tournament held at top-seeded Carthage. The team will take on No. 3-seeded Loras. Time is TBA.
