Meyer; Brown Highlights of Augustana Meet
Performances by Fontbonne's Marcy Meyer and Chris Brown highlighted the Brissmann-Lundeen Invitational for the Griffins on Friday.
The women's team ran their first 6K of the season on what will be the DIII Midwest Region course in November. Meyer, a senior, planned on running with fellow Griffin Carly Reidt but the two got separated early in the race. Meyer continued on to run a time of 28:39 despite continuing to work through a significant hip injury for the past year and only being able to run thirty minutes at a time in training. "Marcy is by no means at 100%," comments Coach Blake "but she has done everything in her power to diagnose and treat the injury. She's a senior, she is determined to race, and I think come the SLIAC race she is going to be a key contributor for us." Alyssa Tonner also ran well for the Griffins, running a time of 24:01 and placing 46th in the field on 415 runners.
On the men's side, freshman Chris Brown had a breakthrough race, running a minute and a half faster over 8K than he did two weeks ago in a time of 29:33.
Men's captain Justin Horneker observed, "I was impressed with our ability to stay relaxed in the first half of the race. It was a good sign that our hard work throughout the early part of the season is paying off." Women's captain Alyssa Tonner agreed, "The team's performance is reflective of the hard work and dedication each person puts in during pratice. I am proud of everyone and look forward to seeing our progress in upcoming meets."
In two weeks the Griffins will compete at the Illinois College Invitational in Jacksonville, IL.
