Softball ranked #3 in Midwest D3 polls; sits at #1 in SLIAC at 14-0
St. Louis- Fontbonne University softball is on a roll, winning their last 15 games, remaining unbeaten in SLIAC play (14-0) at home (10-0) and on the road (9-0). The Griffins' only losses came at neutral site games, and most were among nationally ranked teams (6-9).
After Fontbonne's sweep of Webster Saturday evening, the Griffins are now 25-9 on the season. With only two conference games remaining, the Griffins will be named regular season SLIAC champions for the 3rd year in a row.
During the first contest against Webster, Fontbonne took to the scoreboard first in the third inning, following by a longball hit by Sarah Cerutti to give the Griffins the 2-0 lead. Webster answered in the bottom of the sixth when Powers stole home and Franck scored on a fielder's choice.
Tied 2-2, Fontbonne's bats came alive in the top of the seventh, scoring their final two runs, while holding Webster scoreless for the win. Rachel McCarthy got the win. McCarthy has won 11 of 17 starts this season.
Three Gorlok errors and timely hitting in the first inning of the second game gave the Griffins a 3-0 edge. Kayla Mahoney homered for Webster, in the bottom of the second and Cassie Glixman scored in the top of the third for a Griffin 4-1 lead.
Fontbonne saw three more runs in the top of the 5th after Webster got two outs right away. Emily Smith hit her first collegiate home run, bringing in Fitzpatrick and Hargate to end the game's scoring.
Madi Leonard won the game, striking out 12 batters in 6 innings of work.
Fontbonne will play next at Lindenwood in St. Charles, MO on Wednesday night. Doubleheader starts at 5:30pm.
