Softball splits games with WashU; ends 17-game win streak
St. Louis- Fontbonne University softball saw their 17-game win streak go down in history books during the 5th inning against the Washington University Bears on Friday.
The Griffins scored three runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Hargate led with a leadoff walk followed by a 2nd-base steal. Emily Smith singled, sending Hargate to third. Hargate scored off Sarah Cerutti's single to shortstop. Smith and Cerutti scored on Cassie Glixman's single to center field.
The Bears scored a run in the 4th. Neal was initially walked by McCarthy, advanced to 2nd on a single, advanced to 3rd on a fielder's choice, and scored on another fielder's choice.
WashU brought in their final three runs of the afternoon in the bottom of the 5th to steal the win.
Fontbonne won the 2nd game against the Bears 12-5. Hargate homered to left center to get the Griffins on the scoreboard in the 2nd.
Fontbonne took advantage of base-running with a couple of WashU errors, scoring six runs on four hits in the top of the 4th to take a 7-2 lead.
White homered in the 4th, bringing in Mullen and Berg homered in the 5th scoring Mullen again. The Bears cut the deficit 7-4.
Simon homered for Fontbonne, scoring Nappier and Smith, increasing the Griffin's lead to 11-4.
The Bears were able to score a final run in the bottom of the 7th.
Leonard recorded the win for Fontbonne, with Neal suffering the loss for Washington U.
Fontbonne is now 28-10 on the year.
