The Fontbonne University women's softball team won their opening game in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament last night defeating #4 seed Eureka College 8-0. The Griffins, the tournament #1 seed, improved to 31-10.
Fontbonne junior pitcher Rachel McCarthy threw a three-hit complete game shutout to lead the Griffins. Sarah Cerutti, Marissa Simon, and Dani Glixman all drove in a pair of runs to pace the Griffin offense.
Fontbonne is scheduled to play #3 seed Spalding University on Saturday at 2 pm at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. Principia College is hosting the SLIAC Tournament, which the Griffins are trying to win for the fourth straight year. The winner of the SLIAC Tournament advances to the NCAA Div. III National Tournament.
