Outstanding pitching and offense leads to sweep over Eureka
St. Louis- Fontbonne University softball is up to 35 straight regular season conference wins after today's sweep of Eureka College. The Griffins total 41 consecutive wins against SLIAC opponents when including the 2012 and 2013 post-season play.
Game 1
Madi Leonard scorched the Red Devil offense, striking out 11 of 13 batters in four innings of work. Simmons was the only Eureka player to render a hit.
Fontbonne's offense combined for 12 hits including six doubles, a triple and one home run. Cassi Glixman also brought in an RBI on her sacrifice fly. Leading 4-0 after three innings, the Griffins scored eight runs in the fourth. Sarah Cerutti led off with her solo bomb over the fence while four of the team's six doubles scored five of the eight runs.
Shelby Faulkner made her first home debut, not allowing any runs.
Game 2
With two outs in the first, Campbell put Eureka on the scoreboard first with her home run. Eureka struck out two Griffins in the first and crossed the plate for a 2-0 lead after their second-inning at the plate.
Jessie Pratt doubled for the leadoff hit in the second for Fontbonne, followed by two Griffin strike outs. Emily Smith doubled, giving Fontbonne their first point, and after two walks, Fontbonne tied the game after a Red Devil error.
Fontbonne's defense put Eureka away 1-2-3 in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Fontbonne scored three more runs in the third and two in the sixth inning while leaving a total of eight runners on base.
Lindsay Schaefer struck out four while allowing five hits in six innings, taking her 2014 pitching record to 12-0. Michelle Boyer relieved Schaefer in the seventh, allowing one walk and one hit.
