Louisville, KY- Fontbonne softball didn't expect to have the Spalding University Golden Eagles take them into extra innings in game one of their SLIAC doubleheader. Fontbonne squeezed out the 3-2 win in the ninth inning, taking their win streak to a school record 20 games.
The Griffins led 2-1 before Spalding tied the game in the sixth after a Golden Eagle triple brought in the tying run in the sixth. A scoreless seventh forced extra innings. The batter who made the final out from the previous inning is placed on second to start each extra inning. Marissa Simon scored for the Griffins in the ninth after Glixman sisters Cassi and Danni each singled to bring in the winning run.
Spalding committed four errors in the game and left 14 runners on base. Fontbonne committed only one error and left three on base. The Griffins acheived only four hits in the game, coming from the Glixman sisters and Sarah Cerutti.
Madi Leonard pitched seven innings with four walks and five strikouts. Reliever Lindsay Schaefer picked up the win with three strikouts in two innings of work.
Schaefer was the only pitcher in game two for Fontbonne, picking up her first loss on the season as the Griffins continued to struggle at the plate. Cerutti scored first in the second as she stole home when Spalding counteracted in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs. The Golden Eagles led 3-2 after an unearned Spalding run in the fourth followed by an unearned Fontbonne run in the fifth. The Griffins tied the ballgame in the sixth inning on an Emily Smith single to center field, scoring Jessie Pratt.
Spalding scored the winning run in the eighth, handing Fontbonne their first conference loss in their last 36 regular season games, 42 games when counting conference opponents during tournament play. Both teams left eight runner of base.
Fontbonne is now 25-5 overall this season and 13-1 in SLIAC play.
The Griffins host Blackburn College at 1pm and 3pm the Saturday before Easter.
