St. Louis, MO- Madi Leonard got Griffin fans alert as she struck out four of her first five batters faced in tonight's doubleheader against Washington University in the Wydown Showdown. No. 23 Fontbonne went on to win game one 7-3 and held strong during game two, winning 3-2. The two wins give Fontbonne a six-game win streak heading into the conference tournament next weekend.
Leonard struck out her sixth batter (Mehrle), only for Mehrle to reach first on the wild pitch. Leonard's defense stepped up as Emily Smith connected with Cassi Glixman for the pickoff at first.
Washington U. scored an unearned run in the third, holding the lead until the Griffin offense lit up in the fourth. A single, sacrifice bunt and a double tied the game. Jessie Pratt hit her first home run of the year for two RBI's and a Griffin 3-1 lead. Two more doubles and a single drove in two more runs as Fontbonne led 5-1 after four.
Washington U. notched a run in the fifth and sixth to cut the Griffin lead 5-3. Emily Smith hit her first home run of the year for the final two Griffin runs in the sixth. Smith went 2-for-3 at the plate with a stolen base. The Griffins totaled four doubles and Leonard sturck out nine batters.
Fontbonne scored in the first and third for a 2-0 lead in game two. During the fourth inning, both teams scored once and Fontbonne led 3-1 until the ninth. Washington U. scored one run in the ninth with two outs, but Leonard got out of the jam with a popup.
Lindsay Schaefer started game two, going four innings with two strikeouts, two walks and four hits. Leonard came in and struck out three in three innings while giving up one hit and the second run.
Fontbonne gets the first seed in the SLIAC Tournament taking on #4 Westminster in round one on Thursday, May 1st. Principia College is hosting the tournament in Elsah, Ill.
