"WE" advances to NCAA Div. III Regionals for 5th Straight Year
St. Louis, MO- Fontbonne University softball has won their fifth straight St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament after three straight wins in the tournament. Fontbonne defeated Westminster 5-0 , Spalding 10-2 in six innings and Greenville in the Championship game 6-1. Overall the Griffins are now 34-5 on the 2014 season.
During the tournament, Fontbonne out-hit their opponents 22-16 and scored 21 runs to their opposition's three. Griffin hits included seven doubles, one triple and two home runs.
Madi Leonard pitched all but one inning, allowing 16 hits and seven walks while striking out a total of 21 batters.
Fontbonne had zero fielding errors over the course of the tournament, backing up their offense. Shannon Fitzpatrick drew four walks and was hit by a pitch twice. Fitzpatrick hit a double and a triple, scored five times, stole three bases and scored first in each game. Lindsay Schaefer connected on four hits (two doubles). Emily Smith added 22 putouts behind home plate.
Griffins on the SLIAC All-Tournament Team include Fitzpatrick, Smith, Schaefer and Tournament MVP Leonard.
Fontbonne will find out who they play at the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, May 5th at 9am central. The announcement will be streamed in the Dunham Student Activity Center on Campus.
