Griffins split doubleheader at No. 18 Washington University

St. Louis, Mo. - Errors doomed the Griffins in their 6-4 game one loss to No. 18-ranked Washington University Sunday afternoon. Danni Glixman started the Griffins off with a bang, hammering a solo shot to left, her first home run of the year. The Bears answered right back, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead.
Fontbonne took a 4-3 lead in the third scoring three runs on four hits. Emily Smith recorded a triple, scoring Lindsay Schaefer. Fontbonne allowed Washington U. to three runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Bears held on for the win. Pitcher Michelle Boyer suffered the loss while the Griffin defense committed four errors.
Fontbonne rebounded at the plate in game two, defeating the Bears 6-1. The Griffins recorded one run in the first, second and third, followed by three runs in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. Washington U.'s only run crossed the plate in the bottom of the sixth, the final run of the game.
Freshman Sam Brown hit her first collegiate home run in the second inning, ultimately the game-winning run. Schaefer pitched all seven innings, earning her third win of the season.
Fontbonne is now 9-9 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The Griffins will play six SLIAC games this week, traveling down Big Bend to Webster Tuesday at 5pm, followed by a home contest against MacMurray Wednesday at 5pm and then making the trip to Iowa Wesleyan Friday.
