Griffins' bats quiet in 1-0 win over Spalding
Leonard throws her second complete-game shutout of the season as Griffins win 20th consecutive game.
Elsah, Ill. - A quick 1-0 win over Spalding University in the first round of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament and the Griffins will take on Greenville College Friday at 6 p.m. at Principia College in Elsah, Ill. Greenville defeated MacMurray on a two-out, two-run walk-off home run that hit the top of the fence fell over. Tonight's win marks the 20th consecutive win for Fontbonne, tying the school record and is the 17th shutout on the season.
Spalding had the bases loaded to start the game but Leonard got out of the jam. Cassi Glixman hit a double in the first inning for Fontbonne but was left stranded, something both teams suffered throughout the game. The game was scoreless through three and a half innings when Danni Glixman hit a shot to right that was a foot below the top of the fence. With zero outs, her triple was negated after she was sent home trying to score the game's first run. Cassi has hit successfully in each of the last 15 games while Danni currently has a 16-game hitting streak.
Courtney Kedroski hustled out the throw to first, sending Newcomer of the Year, Sam Brown to the plate. Kedroski stole second, setting up the winning run. Brown recorded the only RBI single in the fifth, sending Kedroski home.
Madi Leonard recorded her 23rd win of the season tonight and her second complete game shutout of the season, striking out 12 batters. The Griffins defeated last year's Pitcher of the Year, Kelci Flener. Ironically, Leonard's previous complete-game shutout this year was also against Spalding with Flener on the mound in the Griffins' 1-0 win in Louisville on March 28th.
After the game, the SLIAC postseason awards were announced. You can find our full recap here.
If the Griffins lose tomorrow they will play immediately afterwards. A win tomorrow and the Griffins play in the Championship match Saturday at 1 p.m.
