Clermont, Fla. - Fontbonne softball got out to a rough start over spring break, losing to the University of St. Thomas- Minnesota 3-0 and Buena Vista University 7-3.

Senior pitcher Madi Leonard took some time to adjust on the mound as she walked five to allow two Tommies to cross the plate in the first inning. Leonard totaled seven strikeouts with two in the first, three in the second and one each in the fourth and sixth innings. The veteran gave up four hits as her defense committed three errors in the game.
Fontbonne's offense was limited as the Griffins struck out 12 times while earning five hits. Courtney Kedroski and Emily Smith each recorded one double.
Buena Vista
Fontbonne senior pitcher Lindsay Schaefer had a tremendous start as she struck out all three Beavers to open the second game of the day. Buena Vista retaliated with three runs in the second after which the Griffins responded with two runs. Schaefer started things off with a double to center when freshman Melanie Russo singled through the left side and advanced to second on the throw home to keep Schaefer a third. Emelia Modglin, another freshman, doubled to left to score Fontbonne's only two runs of the first six innings. Buena Vista scored once in the third and once in the fifth to lead 5-2 before adding two insurance runs in the sixth on a triple and wild pitch.
Michelle Boyer came in in relief for Fontbonne in the seventh without allowing a hit. After freshman Maddie Cooksey reached first on a Buena Vista error, she stole second and scored Fontbonne's final run on a Sam Brown single up the middle.
Schaefer struck out seven in her six innings of work, allowing three walks and 10 hits.
Fontbonne will return to action tomorrow in Clermont, Fla. for day two of their eight-game spring break trip. The Griffins will take on North Central College at 8 a.m. central time followed by Carthage College at 10 a.m. central. Fontbonne has started the 2016 season 0-7, their worst start since the 2008 team began play 0-8.
